They are real diamonds

Let us settle the biggest question first. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond. It is the same material, pure crystallized carbon, with the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as a mined diamond. It is not a simulant like cubic zirconia or moissanite, which are different materials that only resemble diamond.

Because they are identical, lab-grown diamonds are graded on the exact same 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat) and receive the same grading reports from labs like GIA. To the eye, and to most standard tests, they are indistinguishable. Specialized equipment can identify a stone's origin, mainly for documentation.

How each is made

  • Natural diamonds formed billions of years ago, deep in the Earth under intense heat and pressure, and were carried toward the surface by ancient volcanic activity.
  • Lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks in specialized reactors using one of two methods: HPHT (high pressure, high temperature, mimicking Earth's conditions) or CVD (chemical vapor deposition, building the crystal atom by atom from carbon-rich gas).

The end product is the same crystal; only the origin and the timescale differ.

The price gap has exploded

Here is the headline difference. Because lab-grown production has scaled up rapidly, prices have fallen dramatically. A lab-grown diamond now commonly costs on the order of 70 to 90% less than a comparable natural diamond of the same size and quality, with roughly 80% being a frequently cited figure. That gap has widened steadily and continues to shift, so treat specific numbers as a moving target.

In practical terms, a budget that buys a modest natural diamond can buy a much larger or higher-quality lab-grown one.

The resale reality

The flip side of falling prices: lab-grown diamonds do not hold resale value well. Wholesale prices keep dropping and the secondary market is thin, so a lab-grown stone bought today may be worth little if resold. Natural diamonds hold value better, though they are not really "investments" either. Buy a lab-grown diamond for the beauty and size it gets you now, not as a store of value.

The sustainability question

Lab-grown diamonds are often marketed as the greener, more ethical choice, and there is a real case: they sidestep the land disturbance of mining and the risk of "conflict" stones. But it is not a clean win. Growing diamonds is energy-intensive, and the environmental footprint depends heavily on whether that energy comes from renewable or fossil sources. "Lower impact" is a reasonable claim, not a settled fact, and depends on the specific producer.

If you want the biggest, brightest stone for your money and are comfortable that it will not hold value, lab-grown is compelling. If you value rarity, tradition, and better resale, natural still has an edge. Neither choice is wrong.
